An Actor The "Time Shift" function of a digital video recorder allows you to pause the recording of a film to go to the bathroom, or to flip through the other channels, fall asleep and then go back to your movie with some delay. You can resume playback right where you left off-but now you are watching the version stored on your hard drive rather the one being televised by the TV station. In contrast to traditional VCRs, the new digital recorders will let you move back and forth through a program while they are still recording it in the background. Viewing a program that is yet to be recorded in its entirety thus almost amounts to catching a glimpse of the future. Before the introduction of this feature, the broadcast contents could arrest viewers' attention to such a degree that it was impossible for them to do anything else before the program was over, simply because it was live. But the "Time Shift" function enables us, if only in theory, to abandon temporarily even as momentous an event as the Soccer World Cup final. This means that there can be, for a moment, something more important than the program. An Actor tells the story of
an actor whose life is gravely affected by a time shift. He experiences
its effects before the movie in which he is to star is even shot. But
he drops out of the time shift, and while everything else is on hold,
he wanders through the sets of other movies. |
